There will be a selection of probate documents from the Durham collection exhibited at Palace Green Library from 21 September to 16 October 2009, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This exhibition marks the completion of the cataloguing phase of the project. The online catalogue will be launched early next year. A full online version of this year's exhibition is available from this page.
Also on this page are other, earlier, NEI online exhibitions. These follow two themes: first, a series of the more common probate documents are illustrated, with their typical features being examined and their function in the probate process explained. Second, a more quixotic selection of documents have been selected from the archive, each telling its own tale of life in the North-east of England as it was lived in the years between the 16th and the 19th centuries. Many of these latter online exhibitions are written and presented by the NEI volunteers who first came across these documents as they catalogued the probate records at Durham Palace Green Library. From 2010 researchers will be able to do their own online exploring of images of all the catalogued probate documents themselves, but until then we hope the following featured documents will whet your appetite.
